AQA Biology Paper 1 covers the first four topics of the specification: Cell Biology, Organisation, Infection and Response, and Bioenergetics. Nothing from topics 5 to 7 appears on it. It is worth 50% of your Biology GCSE: 100 marks in 1h 45m for Triple, or 70 marks in 1h 15m for Combined Science. In 2027 it is the very first science exam, on Tuesday 11 May, 9:00am. Here is exactly what to revise and how.
What is on Biology Paper 1, the full topic list
Topic 1: Cell Biology. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, specialised cells, microscopy and magnification calculations, mitosis and the cell cycle, stem cells, diffusion, osmosis and active transport.
Topic 2: Organisation. Cell to tissue to organ to organ system, enzymes and digestion, the heart and blood vessels, gas exchange, cancer, plant tissues and transpiration.
Topic 3: Infection and Response. Pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protists), specific diseases, human defence systems, vaccination, antibiotics and drug development.
Topic 4: Bioenergetics. Photosynthesis including limiting factors on the rate, aerobic and anaerobic respiration, response to exercise, metabolism.

If it is inheritance, evolution, homeostasis, the nervous system or ecology, that is Paper 2. Do not waste Paper 1 revision time on it.
The required practicals on Paper 1
At least 15% of marks across your science GCSE relate to practical work, and Paper 1 questions draw on these practicals:
- Microscopy, using a light microscope to observe cells
- Osmosis, mass change in potato or plant tissue
- Enzymes, the effect of pH on amylase
- Food tests: Benedict's, iodine, Biuret, Sudan III and the emulsion test
- Photosynthesis, light intensity and pondweed
- Culturing microorganisms, Triple Biology only
You will not be asked simply to describe the method. You will be asked about variables, improvements, errors and calculations from results. Revise them as experiments to critique, not scripts to memorise.
How to actually revise it, rather than re-reading notes
Re-reading and highlighting feel productive but are the weakest revision methods. Retrieval practice, forcing your brain to recall the answer before you check it, consistently beats them. In practice:
- One topic at a time, test first. Answer questions on a topic before you revise it. The ones you get wrong are your revision list, and you have just saved hours.
- Learn, then close the notes and retrieve. Read a section, shut it, write down everything you remember. Check, fill the gaps, repeat.
- Flashcards for the recall facts. Definitions, equations (the photosynthesis and respiration word equations come up constantly), and the differences lists. Note that on this paper it is mitosis only, not meiosis.
- Past-paper questions by topic. Especially the 4 to 6 mark questions, because examiners reuse the same core question shapes year after year: explain osmosis results, evaluate vaccination data, interpret a rate-of-photosynthesis graph. Work through the past papers by topic rather than whole papers at first.
- Know your maths skills. At least 10% of biology marks are mathematical: magnification, percentage change, surface area to volume ratio, and reading graphs.
