Sustainable fisheries (4.7.5.3) — AQA GCSE Biology Revision Notes

Revision notes for AQA GCSE Biology specification point 4.7.5.3, Sustainable fisheries.

Fishing is Decreasing Fish Stocks

FISH STOCKS in the ocean are DECLINING because humans are OVERFISHING.

This leads to disruptions in OCEAN FOOD CHAINS and the potential disappearance of certain fish species.

To address this, we have used TWO techniques:

1. FISHING QUOTAS that LIMIT the numbers and size of particular fish species that can be caught. This means more fish can survive and REPRODUCE.

2. INCREASING NET SIZE so that fewer UNWANTED and YOUNGER species are caught as they escape through the LARGER GAPS.
