Transition Metals

TRANSITION METALS are located in the CENTRE of the periodic table (Between Group 2 and 3).

Transition Metals

Transition Metal Properties:

Transition metals have unique PROPERTIES that make them different to other metals:

  • They can have MORE THAN ONE ION. For example, copper forms Cu⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions.
  • TRANSITION METAL ions are often COLOURED, making the compounds that contain them colourful (e.g., POTASSIUM CHROMATE(VI) is yellow, and POTASSIUM MANGANATE(VII) is purple).
  • The are used as CATALYSTS to SPEED UP reactions. eg. the HABER PROCESS uses IRON as a catalyst.
