Advantages of Sexual Reproduction

1. PRODUCES VARIATION — Sexual reproduction generates VARIATION in the offspring, crucial for adapting to changing environmental conditions.

2. SURVIVAL ADVANTAGE — Variation can provide a survival advantage through NATURAL SELECTION, helping organisms adapt to new challenges in their environment.

3. SELECTIVE BREEDING — Humans can speed up natural selection through SELECTIVE BREEDING, which enhances traits like increased food production.

 

Advantages of Asexual Reproduction

1. SINGLE PARENT — Asexual reproduction requires ONLY ONE PARENT, simplifying the reproductive process.

2. EFFICIENCY — It is more TIME AND ENERGY EFFICIENT as there is no need to find a mate.

3. RAPID MULTIPLICATION — Asexual reproduction is generally faster and can produce MANY IDENTICAL OFFSPRING quickly when conditions are favourable.

 

Some organisms can reproduce by BOTH SEXUAL AND ASEXUAL methods depending on their environmental conditions. This adaptability can be advantageous in unpredictable or changing environments.

Examples include:

  • MALARIAL PARASITES that reproduce asexually in the human host and sexually in mosquitoes.
  • FUNGI, which can reproduce through SPORES asexually or sexually to increase genetic VARIATION.
  • PLANTS like strawberries or daffodils that use RUNNERS or BULB DIVISION for asexual reproduction but also produce SEEDS sexually.
