DNA and Naturally Occurring Polymers

DNA

DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) contains genetic instructions essential for the development and functioning of all living organisms and viruses.

DNA consists of TWO POLYMER CHAINS of MONOMERS called NUCLEOTIDES.

There are FOUR different types of NUCLEOTIDE, each containing a different base: A, T, C, and G.

Bases on one polymer chain pair up with those on the opposite chain via bond, in a DOUBLE HELIX shape.

The sequence of bases in DNA acts as a CODE for an organism’s genes.

 

Naturally Occurring Polymers 

There are many other naturally occuring POLYMERS that are important for life:

  • PROTEINS are made of monomers of AMINO ACIDS.
  • STARCH is made of monomers of GLUCOSE.
  • CELLULOSE is also made of monomers of GLUCOSE.
